Inhaled loxapine is used to treat acute agitation in adult patients with schizophrenia or bipolar I disorder (type of depression). It works in the brain to increase levels of dopamine and serotonin, which are chemicals that help regulate agitation, schizophrenia, and depression. Loxapine is an antipsychotic medicine. This medicine is available only under a special restricted distribution program called the Adasuve® REMS program. This product is available in the following dosage forms:

For this medicine, the following should be considered: Tell your doctor if you have ever had any unusual or allergic reaction to this medicine or any other medicines. Appropriate studies have not been performed on the relationship of age to the effects of inhaled loxapine in the pediatric population. Safety and efficacy have not been established. However, this medicine should not be used for behavioral problems in older adults with dementia. Weigh the potential benefits against the potential risks before taking this medication while breastfeeding. Although certain medicines should not be used together at all, in other cases two different medicines may be used together even if an interaction might occur. In these cases, your doctor may want to change the dose, or other precautions may be necessary.
