Eczema Treatment

For many people, yes — eczema is chronic with periods of flares and remission. About half of children with eczema see significant improvement by adulthood, but many continue to experience symptoms. Adults who develop eczema later in life tend to have a more persistent course.

Common triggers include dry skin, certain soaps and detergents, sweat, stress, synthetic fabrics, pet dander, and certain foods in some individuals. Keeping a symptom diary noting flare timing and exposures is a practical way to identify personal triggers.

Biologics are appropriate when moderate-to-severe eczema hasn't responded adequately to topical treatments and affects quality of life significantly. Dupixent targets specific inflammatory pathways and can produce substantial, sustained improvement in many patients.

Topical steroids are very effective for flare management but are not recommended for prolonged continuous use due to risks of skin thinning and steroid atrophy. Non-steroidal options — tacrolimus, pimecrolimus, Eucrisa, Opzelura — are preferred for maintenance and sensitive skin areas.

Topical steroids carry skin thinning risk with overuse. Non-steroidal topicals may cause initial burning. Dupixent's most notable side effect is conjunctivitis. Oral JAK inhibitors have a broader systemic side effect profile requiring lab monitoring and clinical oversight.
