Common symptoms of a urinary tract infection (UTI) include a burning sensation while urinating, a frequent or urgent need to urinate, cloudy or strong-smelling urine, pelvic or lower abdominal pain, and sometimes fever. If you experience fever, chills, back pain, or vomiting, seek medical attention promptly as these may indicate a more serious kidney infection.

In some cases, telehealth providers may prescribe antibiotics for uncomplicated UTIs based on your symptoms without requiring a urine culture. However, a urine culture is recommended when symptoms are severe, recurrent, or complicated, as it helps identify the specific bacteria and ensures the most effective antibiotic is prescribed.

A UTI occurs when bacteria in the urinary tract cause symptoms such as pain, burning during urination, or frequent urination. Asymptomatic bacteriuria means bacteria are present in the urine without causing any symptoms. Most people with asymptomatic bacteriuria do not need antibiotics unless they are pregnant or undergoing certain urological procedures.

Recurring UTIs may be caused by factors such as sexual activity, hormonal changes after menopause, urinary tract abnormalities, incomplete bladder emptying, certain birth control methods, or inadequate hydration.
