Frequently Asked Questions

Motion sickness is triggered by a sensory conflict — the vestibular system in your inner ear senses motion your eyes don't, or vice versa, and the brain interprets the mismatch as something being wrong, producing nausea, cold sweats, and dizziness. Reading in a moving car, sitting below deck on a boat, and VR headsets are classic triggers. Susceptibility tends to run in families and typically peaks between ages 2 and 12 before easing in adulthood.

Sit where motion feels least — the front seat of a car, over the wing on a plane, midship near the waterline on a boat. Focus on the horizon, keep your head still, get fresh air, and avoid reading, screens, or heavy meals right before travel. Acupressure wristbands and ginger (capsules, candy, or tea) help some people, and repeated exposure through gradual habituation reduces sensitivity over time.

For mild-to-moderate cases, first-generation antihistamines — dimenhydrinate (Dramamine), meclizine (Bonine, Antivert), and diphenhydramine (Benadryl) — taken 30–60 minutes before travel are effective. For longer or more severe trips, the transdermal scopolamine patch (Transderm Scop) provides up to 72 hours of coverage. Oral promethazine and anti-emetics like ondansetron are options for severe cases or when other treatments haven't been enough.

For cruises, long flights, or people with severe motion sickness, the scopolamine patch is often the most effective option — a single patch behind the ear applied 4 hours before travel provides up to 72 hours of prevention with less sedation than oral antihistamines. It does have anticholinergic side effects (dry mouth, blurred vision, sometimes drowsiness) and isn't appropriate for people with narrow-angle glaucoma, urinary retention, or certain other conditions.

First-generation antihistamines commonly cause drowsiness, dry mouth, and blurred vision; they can impair driving and shouldn't be combined with alcohol. Scopolamine causes similar anticholinergic effects and, rarely, confusion or hallucinations — especially in older adults. Ginger and acupressure have essentially no side effects. Ondansetron is very well tolerated but can cause headache or constipation.
