Seasonal Allergies Treatment

Seasonal allergic rhinitis results from an IgE-mediated immune response to airborne allergens — tree pollen (spring), grass pollen (summer), and weed pollen (fall) are the most common seasonal triggers. Mold spores peak in late summer and fall. Symptoms occur when pollen counts are high.

Intranasal corticosteroid sprays — fluticasone, mometasone, budesonide — are the most effective single treatment for nasal symptoms and are recommended as first-line therapy. They require consistent daily use starting 1–2 weeks before the season for maximum benefit. Non-drowsy antihistamines provide additional relief.

Subcutaneous immunotherapy (allergy shots) and sublingual immunotherapy (tablets or drops) can produce long-lasting desensitization — reducing symptoms and medication need for years after completing the course. It's most appropriate for patients with significant allergy burden not adequately controlled with medications.

Keep windows closed during high-pollen periods, use air conditioning, shower after outdoor activities, dry laundry indoors during peak season, check pollen counts and limit outdoor exposure on high-count days, and change clothing after prolonged outdoor time.

Intranasal corticosteroids are very well tolerated — occasional nasal dryness and nosebleeds may occur. Second-generation antihistamines (cetirizine, loratadine, fexofenadine) cause minimal sedation. First-generation antihistamines (diphenhydramine) cause significant drowsiness. Decongestants may raise blood pressure and cause insomnia.
